Home of the San Antonio Spurs
Nearly 30 years ago, the Dallas Chaparrals migrated south to San Antonio. Renamed the Spurs, the team has made basketball an important part of the San Antonio community since 1973. Just three years later, after several seasons in the ABA, the Spurs merged into the NBA. With the help of Tim Duncan, George Gervin and David Robinson, the Spurs have found themselves as one of the top teams in the NBA today. The fact that the Spurs have been in the playoffs a total of 26 times in their 30 seasons of competition further proves this theory. The 1998-99 and 2002-03 seasons both marked a milestone for the Spurs and the city of San Antonio as they were marked NBA Champions. The championship trophies are proudly displayed directly behind section 114 on the Plaza Level at the SBC Center, which serves as home to the San Antonio Spurs.
Other proud displays at the SBC Center include a variety of artwork located throughout the venue. The artwork presence was unveiled during the grand opening. In addition, fans who wish to shop for official team merchandise may stop by the FANShop, which is located on the Plaza Level. The store features apparel, collectibles and other goodies from the Spurs. For fans who just cannot get enough of the action, the H-E-B FANFiesta is an interactive play area for children of all ages, both young and old. This section is located on the Balcony Level and is open during most SBC Center home events. If that's not enough, fans can also get a close up look on an educational guided walking tour of the SBC Center. Tour spectators will visit the press box area, a luxury suite and a locker room. SBC Center tours are conducted only on days that do not feature events and are held regularly for the convenience of fans.
Fans who attend a sporting event at the SBC Center will enjoy a new innovative eight-sided LED scoreboard with a four-sided video screen. This new construction will be seen suspended over the court, ice or stage dependant upon the event being held. A 600 ft. long, 2.5 ft. tall screen will also be featured for the announcements of scoreboard updates and modern animations.
The Spurs have had a great impact on the San Antonio community. Among the recognitions, a 2000 Pro Team Community Award was presented by the Worlds Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame. The Spurs Foundation has donated in excess of $5 million in funds and similar contributions to deserving children throughout Southern Texas.
