America West Arena
Home of the Phoenix Suns

In 1992, the doors of America West Arena opened to the public. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the new facility was constructed under the architectural guidance of Ellerbe Becket at a cost of $90 million. Phoenix Sun's owner, Jerry Colangelo recognized the need for a new facility in 1988. It was then that plans began to develop for America West Arena. Current tenants include the NBA's Phoenix Suns, the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury, the ECHL's Phoenix Roadrunners and the AFL's Arizona Rattlers.

Many memorable moments have occurred at America West Arena, including three 1993 NBA Finals, one of the 1998 WNBA game finals and two Arena Bowl games. In 1997, the Rattlers clinched the Arena Football League world championship inside these walls.

Each year, a variety of events are held at America West Arena, including professional wrestling, music concerts, boxing competitions, family shows and much more. In fact, over 200 events are held annually and over two million spectators pack the arena each year. Glass walls, a large video screen and a grand entrance combine to give fans a terrific look at the modern amenities this facility has to offer.

Fans in search of officially licensed merchandise can browse the Teamshop, which is located inside America West Arena. A variety of apparel, collectibles and other souvenirs are up for grabs during normal business hours, as well as special event hours during game days.

In January 2006, the doors of the former America West Arena will reopen as the US Airways Center. Under the terms of a new 10 year partnership, the name was changed in September after a successful merger among America West Airlines and US Airways. The new naming rights agreement will be incorporated throughout the building, in advertising, promotions, activities and other operations.

America West Arena, now known as US Airways Center, recently underwent a $70 million improvement project. The once outdoor ticket office is now enclosed in the new Casino Arizona Pavilion, which serves as the venue's entrance. Among the other improvements, a 900 ft. LED ribbon, a center hung scoreboard, new sound system, a new Courtside Club, Lexus Club and more.

The project of converting America West Arena to the new US Airways Center is scheduled to occur over a period of several months. January 2006 will serve as the official unveiling but, until that time, the arena will continue to operate as America West Arena.
