Pocono Raceway
In 1968, Pocono International Raceway held it's first race on the brand new ¾ mile track. It wasn't until 1974, however, that the first NASCAR race was held. While everything seemed great in the beginning, Pocono International Raceway faced financial problems and was nearly faced with having to file for bankruptcy. As the owner's were on the verge of selling the facility, Bill France called to request a meeting in New York. He offered his support of Pocono International Raceway and convinced the owners to persist. Shortly after, NASCAR's second race rolled into Pocono and provided it with a rise in attendance, popularity and recognition.
In 1990, track officials sat down and discussed a complete renovation for Pocono International Raceway. After deciding on a new design, the facility began to undergo new reconstruction. Approximately $3 million was spent each year over the next 10 years, which equaled a total of $30 million in redesign. Among the improvements, new crash walls were constructed, new paving was completed and the garage areas were redesigned with all new garages. The new garage area is a one of a kind and, according to Pocono International Raceway, is second to none. In addition, a brand new 150-site motor home park was added. The only other Nextel Cup racetrack to possess all of these amenities is Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. Another construction project included a large Paddock Area, which was built allowing fans to be a mere 56 feet away from the competition.
Still not close enough to the action? Fans who want to get an even closer look at their favorite drivers can purchase a pit pass. This type of access usually entitles the fan to stroll around on pit road at a predestinated time prior to the beginning of the race. Pit passes do not generally include garage access, but does allow the fan to mingle with crew members, media and NASCAR drivers themselves. This is a terrific opportunity for autograph seekers.
Not only can fans watch the racing action at Pocono International Raceway, they can also be a part of the action at this 2.5 mile superspeedway. Fans can have the opportunity to actually get behind the wheel of a stock car, formula car, open cockpit or open wheeled automobile. Programs include the basic training or advanced courses and range from ½ day education courses or an in-depth 5 day program.
Pocono International Raceway is said to be located in the Magic Triangle. New York, Philadelphia and Pocono are all within 90 miles of each other, which has earned each the title as a member of the Magic Triangle. Pocono International Raceway is located in Pennsylvania.
