Daytona International Speedway
The Daytona 500, which is held every year at Daytona International Speedway, is to NASCAR what the SuperBowl is to football. Also known as "The Great American Race," the Daytona 500 is the largest and most recognized race in America and it always marks the beginning of the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series every February.
The Daytona International Speedway sits on a large 480 acre complex, which hosts the most diverse racing schedule anywhere. It is this very diversity that has earned the speedway the title of "World Center of Racing." Each year, the facility is booked for nine weekends of racing action and more than two entire months for the purpose of testing and developing various racing automobiles. Racing aside, there is a rarely a free week on Daytona's calendar. There is always something happening, whether it be local gatherings, special events, car shows, athletic competitions, training, etc.
In July 1996, the speedway welcomed it's new addition of Daytona USA. Tourists flocked to the new facility, which is rich with racing history and commemorative items. Each year, the winner of the Daytona 500 places his/her car at Daytona USA for an entire year. That car is displayed for fans to see as they stroll through the museum. History abounds here with stories and facts dating back to the 1950s, which is when NASCAR first came into existence on the soft sands of Daytona Beach. Soon after it's opening, Daytona USA quickly became "The Official Attraction of NASCAR." It's a multi-million dollar facility that is fun for fans of all ages. There is no denying that the Daytona International Speedway became even more popular with the inception of Daytona USA.
Daytona is host to a variety of racing activities, including go-kart racing. Each year, for five days in December, some of racing's biggest names compete at America's most famous track. In January, race car testing covers the calendar as Speedweeks draws near. In February, fans enjoy the Daytona 500. The following month, in March, the Daytona 200 welcomes fans from across the globe as they show up to support road racing, dirt track and super cross competitors. In addition, the Sports Car Club of America hosts it's amateur sports car races here. Antique and classic car shows, which are hosted by the Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District, are held twice each year during the spring and autumn seasons. In addition to walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons and various other activities, Daytona International Speedway is a hub for racing fans on a daily basis. Whether it's a race weekend or just a day off from work to take the kids to see the legendary Daytona International Speedway and Daytona USA, there's always something happening and it's sure to be exciting.
