Bristol Motor Speedway
Bristol Motor Speedway is located at 151 Speedway Boulevard near the Tennessee and Virginia border. Being one of the shortest tracks on the Nextel Cup circuit does not mean that it's short on excitement. In fact, this 0.533 oval has the highest banking of any racetrack, which makes it high in excitement for both fans and competitors alike. Bristol Motor Speedway was originally planned for a site in Piney Flats, but was eventually built land that was formerly occupied by a dairy farm. Construction, combined with the cost of land acquired to build the facility, totaled at approximately $600,000.00 when all was said and done. Sitting on more than 100 acres and offering over 12,000 parking spaces is just a small part of the big excitement here at Bristol.
In 1961, NASCAR began making regular stops at Bristol just one shore year after the track's construction was complete. After it's surface change from asphalt to concrete in 1992, popularity soared as did the attendance. Since the first NASCAR sanctioned race, ticket sales have soared from 18,000 to an excess of over 160,000 fans with the reconstruction of the speedway's backstretch.
Because of it's high banking, intense completion and temper flare ups, Bristol Motor Speedway is often the site of a large number of yellow flags. Each year, Bristol welcomes hundreds of thousands of fans for the Nextel Cup events. One is held in the afternoon, but many fans anticipate the annual night race with a passion. Tickets for a NASCAR race at the Bristol Motor Speedway are often said to be some of the most difficult to obtain in any sporting event. Rounding out the NASCAR circuit is the Busch Grand National and Craftsman Truck events, which are also held annually at this facility.
Fans who haven't seen Bristol Motor Speedway are missing out on one of the most unbelievable racing experiences in all of NASCAR. It's high banking gives the feel of a sports stadium and, with the cars competing well below the grandstand seats, the sound of roaring engines and lightning quick speeds has nowhere to go but up. For fans in attendance, it's more than a site to behold - it's also a sound that will go unmatched anywhere. The echoes of speed, the competition of short track racing and the tempers that rise through it all make Bristol Motor Speedway everything that it is today - an unforgettable experience.
